Because all of Rowe Pottery
products are handmade, you will not find the consistency of
machine made, production-line products. The size and shape of a
piece will vary and the individual decorator who creates your
piece will influence the pattern. Throwing ridges created by the
potter's hand as it turns on the wheel, brown flashings created
in the kiln where two pots "kiss" each other all add to the
character and uniqueness of your particular piece. These are
inherent traits of salt glaze stoneware and make each piece a
joy for you and generations to come.
Early Americans cherished
their stoneware for its durability in oven and hearth. Crocks,
jars and jugs had to withstand daily use and perform equally
well in extreme hot and cold temperatures. Today we enjoy
authentic salt glaze for the same reasons. It's 100% food safe
and use it in the oven, microwave and is dishwasher safe.
Rowe Pottery is handmade
with pride just like it was 150 years ago. |

Historical 2011 |
There is an old adage among craftsman that the
primary form of an object follows its function. Our historical collection for
2011 reminds us that this past is worthy of reflection. The kitchen throughout
history and still today remains the focal point of the home, our 2012 Historical
Collection continues to build on this strong tradition. This year’s pieces are
unique in that they have strong utilitarian uses, but are less common forms to
find. Our Yellowware preserve jar builds on the strong success of the 2010
butter crock. Yellowware preserve jars were never manufactured in large
quantities so are quite hard to find. Our low cake crock resembles the ever
popular salt glaze crocks, however its low nature traditionally lended itself to
cake baking and storage, these too were made in much smaller quantities as they
traditionally did not hold up well to the extreme baking temperatures. Pitchers
are common in pottery history and remain one of the only tableware pieces that
were commonly thrown, ours evokes a full rounded shape with a short neckband,
traditionally used for cream or milk storage. Our footed bowl form is modeled
after a more unique colander form traditionally used. The bowl would be elevated
to help with the food drainage, this reproduction will sit beautifully atop a
bountiful dining table. Ceramic rolling pins were preferred by many to wooden
ones for traditional use, they were smoother than wood and the cooler surface
meant dough was less likely to stick We have given much attention to the detail
of every piece in our 2011 collection, it is wonderful to reflect on the hours
that were traditionally spent in a kitchen to prepare a meal and take joy in the
progress that has been made over time. |
